We awoke to a glorious, sunny Sunday today, then met in the hotel restaurant for a full Scottish breakfast, and then headed toward New Monkland Parish Church of Scotland, via a very scenic drive through fields of yellow canola and waves of barley. We arrived at the church about 9:00am. What a beautiful, historic church, not to mention it’s a church where Christine Hadden has family ties that go back for centuries!
The people welcomed us with open arms. They love singing and filled the sanctuary with the beautiful sound of music. After the service, they provided us with a delicious lunch.
From there, we went to the Royal British Hotel in Edinburgh, and many of us took advantage of the beautiful sunshine and temperatures in the lower 60’s for a walk in the parks along historic Princes Street.
At 4pm we boarded the motorcoach and rode to Charlotte Baptist Chapel, the largest Baptist church in Scotland, for a worship service and concert afterward. Charlotte Chapel is a vibrant evangelical ministry in the heart of Scotland’s capital. The congregation was filled with people of all ages - ranging from many children and teens to those in their 80’s. They provided us with a light supper, and again, we were warmly welcomed, this time by a crowd of more than 300 in number. They, too, love singing, and sang with us with great joy.
The day was filled with good worship, good eating, good humor, and good fellowship with other Christians. A moment that moved me to tears was the a capella singing of the Doxology as our blessing before lunch with the dear people of New Monklands. And there were many such God moments throughout the day.
