This morning we woke up to a little more leisurely pace, as we did not have to pack our suitcases, since we were staying a second night at the Menzies Cambridge Hotel. We enjoyed a full buffet breakfast before leaving for our tour of Cambridge.
On our way to Cambridge, Adrian, our guide, and Stuart had 2 very nice surprises for us. We stopped in the quaint village of Madingley and saw several thatched roof houses and a lovely estate that is now part of Cambridge University. Then we drove another mile and stopped at the Cambridge American Military Cemetary, where thousands of Americans who died in World War II are buried. There is also a wall there, listing thousands more missing in action, including the great band leader, Glenn Miller. All of us were sobered to be reminded so vividly of the huge sacrifices made so that we can live freely.
We drove into Cambridge where Adrian took us on a guided tour that included the impressive Chapel of King’s College. Many of us ate lunch at the Eagle Pub, which has a ceiling autographed by WWII aviators, who used cigarette lighters to inscribe their names.
From Cambridge, we went to Bunyan Meeting Free Church in Bedford for our final full concert. We practiced, toured the John Bunyan Museum at the church, and had a delicious supper prepared by the ladies of the church. And then we sang! What a time of worship we had! Our audience, normally not in the practice of showing their pleasure too effusively clapped loud and long at the end. One woman stood; a man stomped his feet. Another woman stood up and exclaimed, “Excuse me, that was super!” And they all wanted to stay and talk with us afterwards. It was, perhaps, our best time of worship in concert. Then it was back to the hotel for a few hours of sleep.
